Step 1

  • Read Klein Chapter 5, sections 1-3 and 5.8 and 5.9
  • Watch flipped lecture (Part 1)
  • Work through SkillBuilders 5.1, 5.2, 5.3

Part 1 - Stereoisomerism, chirality, nomenclature (R/S configurations)
42 minutes, skeleton notes pages 5-1 to 5-3

WorksheetCh5-1

Step 2

  • Read Klein Chapter 5, sections 4-7
  • Watch flipped lecture (Part 2)
  • Work through SkillBuilders 5.6, 5.7, 5.8

Part 2 - Fischer projections, molecules with multiple chiral centers
36 minutes, skeleton notes pages 5-4 to 5-6

WorksheetCh5-2

Step 3

  • Read Klein Chapter 5, sections 5.4, 5.10 and 5.11
  • Watch flipped lecture (Part 3)
  • Work through SkillBuilders 5.5 and 5.9
  • Take Canvas quizzes for extra practice and course credit. Two quizzes are available: R/S Quiz, Compare Quiz (each is worth 3 homework points)
  • Work on suggested Chapter 5 EOC problems on WileyPLUS (auto-graded) and/or on paper (self grade, using Solutions Manual).

Part 3 - optical activity, mixtures of enantiomers, alkene nomenclature
23 minutes, skeleton notes pages 5-6 to 5-8

WorksheetCh5-3

Supplemental Materials

  • Work on the two Canvas quizzes for stereochemistry practice (R/S and Compare - each attempt brings up new problems!). Scoring at least 50% on a given quiz will earn 3 points for that quiz, for a total of 6 possible points (this will count as the Chapter 5 "free red ink" homework - Canvas is giving you the feedback in this case). Multiple attempts are allowed, and Canvas records only your highest grade for each quiz. The quizzes must be completed before Exam II to earn course credit, but these quizzes will continue to be available for the remainder of the semester!
